UN urges Vietnam to stop religious persecution The wife of an imprisoned pastor has been tortured by the Vietnamese authorities

The government of Vietnam was warned by two UN experts condemn the country because of religious persecution against a woman who has already been arrested and tortured several times.
Experts Heiner Bielefeldt and Juan E. Méndez reported that Tran Thi Hong is persecuted for denouncing the international community to her husband - Pastor Nguyen Cong Chinh - is arrested for conducting religious activities.
The application of UN human rights experts is for the government to cease all criminalization, persecution and harassment against religious leaders and against human rights activities and their families.
According to UN information, Tran was arrested in April this year and was tortured and warned to stop promoting freedom of religion. After this fact, she was released and arrested other times by the Vietnamese authorities.
"We are concerned that the repeated arrests and continued detention of Tran is a result of their peaceful human rights work and in the exercise of their fundamental rights, a fact that constitutes arbitrary detention," the experts said.
The request is for Tran is free "unconditional" and also to pass Vietnam to respect the right of religious communities. The same text also calls for the release of the pastor who was arrested in 2011 for being the director of the Church Alliance Lutheran Vietnam-US, which is considered by the authorities as "anti-government" and "anti-communism".
